Death/Destruction - Eugene Richards

Death/Destruction - Eugene Richards
Victoria Rakowski

Eugene Richards is a photographer, filmaker and writer. He was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, a place that would go on to inspire images he creates. He received a degree in English from Northeastern University. Richards was involved with social justice issues, and in 1968 he joined VISTA volunteering for the war on poverty. He founded a social service organization and a community newspaper called, Many Voices, which reported on a variety of social issues including the Klu Klux Klan and black political action. His hometown, Dorchester was a changing, racially diverse neighborhood he documented in his work. In addition to his interests in the changes occuring in his hometown, he focuses on topics such as American family, drug addiction, emergency medicine, pediatric AIDS, aging and death in America. He has produced seven short films and seventeen books.  Richards has received numerous awards and honors including the Guggenheim fellowship.

His background as a writer is apparent in the design of his books. Richards is empathetic toward his subjects, interviewing them and getting the inside perspective of their situations. Richards creates beautiful, thought-provoking images, shot with intention and provides context with the addition of supplementary text from interviews.
