Death/Destruction - Editorial & Sports - Sara Stathas

By Steffen Francisco

Sara Stathas is a portrait and event photographer who covers a variety of venues in her work.  Notably, the sporting events she chooses to spotlight on her website are very alternative to the usual idea of sports that come to mind.  Absent are the football, baseball and hockey images that pervade ESPN, replaced with lumberjacking, dog shows and spear fishing.

The work presented is across a variety of subdivisions showing the artist's versatility.  From corporate headshots, work and personal portraits to personal and public projects, the artist operates in the style of a hybrid portrait artist and photojournalist.

The quality of the work is high but the styles of each portraits varies wildly.  While this does show the range of the artist, it also can be a detriment in that potential clients don't know what style that Stathas will deliver for their work without specifying directly, if that's a service she offers.  Having a consistent look and style across all of her professional offerings in the same vein would benefit her overall appeal to future clients.

Stathas' use of flash balanced with ambient light is so capable as to be almost invisible.  In my own practice, the use of strobes and speedlights to augment the naturally available light is going to be key to doing on location portraiture and it's something I admire greatly in her work.
