New Ideas/Phantasm - Caleb Charland

Caleb Charland

Hayley Ishihara

Caleb Charland is a fairly newly graduated artist. He received his BFA in 2004 from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA and then went on to receive his MFA in 2010 from the School of Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, IL. Since 2007, Charland has been in countless group and solo exhibitions mostly featuring his new idea work. His most popular series, Back to Light, revolves around the idea of the basic potato battery project. Throughout this project, he is lighting various lamps and chandeliers outdoors with just a variety of fruits from apples to oranges to grapefruits. To him this project is his exploration of how even simple things can still be fantastical and even though uncertain, still full of scientific knowledge. Besides his fascination with all of the wonder in the world this project also speaking to the endless possibilities for alternative energy.

Another project that I found very interesting was The Artifacts of Fire and Wax. I love the idea of these photos because they are photograms. Since most of the old school techniques are fading slowly, I think it is wonderful that Charland is still trying to keep this technique alive. These photos are aesthetically pleasing and are interesting in things that created the photogram. This project's title even says fire and wax, the idea that fire is causing these candles to drop the hot wax sporadically but somehow perfectly sporadic is so pleasing to me.
