Landscape - Helen Levitt

Helen Levitt
By Steffen Francisco

Helen Levitt is a street photographer in the truest sense of the word.  Documenting the streets of New York City for decades of her life, she was able to expose the reality of the world she inhabited to people who couldn't conceive of a city that size or the kind of variety of life inhabiting it.  Her photography was important in several arenas such as civil rights, freedom and city life.

During her time living in New York City, Levitt became a familiar along her routes taking photographs  of the local population, tourists and others.  She walked the familiar paths around her neighborhood, taking both photos of those aware, as well as un-posed portraits of unsuspecting passersby.  Her work is noted for containing men and women, white, black, latino and other colored peoples.   She portrayed life as it is in the city from the rich to the poor and every step between.
