Joseph Mougel
by David Kieckhefer
We had the honor of hearing our very own Joseph Mougel speak
about his work and experiences as both a student and an artist. Much of Mougel’s
work is influenced by his time in the Marines, especially his series Blanc where he dresses civilians in
military uniforms and paints them entirely white, making them completely camouflaged.
It is incredibly eerie to only have the eyes of his models remind us that these
ghost-like images are in fact human.
Mougel is currently working on his series, Hole, which is a performance piece that
combines video with his photographic work. The performance aspect of this series
seems to drive him more than the refined finished quality that we see in Blanc.
Joseph visits Marquette and asks viewers to document his performance on twitter using #digMU
